The 2009 Olivo estate extra virgin blend
It's that time of year again - we have released our 2009 estate extra virgin blend and it is getting close to Christmas. If you have not yet had the opportunity to try the 2009 blend, the oil is fruity, rich and mild with a hint of pepper on the back palate. On the front palate are green tomatoes and artichokes which come from the Barnea olive and oregano from the Leccino and Frantoio olives. The major olives in this year' s blend are the Barnea, Leccino and Frantoio with a dash of Manzanillo.
Every year the oil is different. This year's blend reflects the hot summer but late wet autumn - hence the mildness.
The 2009 oil won a silver medal at the national awards in October so we are keeping up with our medal winning tradition. Our estate blend has won a medal every year we have owned the grove since 2003. But we don't take this for granted and continue to be focussed on quality.
Ideas for Christmas
Our oils make wonderful Christmas gifts. People were buying well at the Thorndon Fair in Wellington this year, despite the blustery gales - not good when you have bottles that the wind whips away and I have never seen olive oil blown out of a dish before!. Good Wellington wind!
High on the shopping list were our 750ml bottles of extra virgin and our orange infused olive oil which several people told me they were enjoying on ice-cream with shavings of 70% cocoa chocolate.
Please click on our web site www.olivo.co.nz for other ideas to use our orange oil and of course to buy your Christmas gifts.
I still have several tasting sessions planned before Christmas - do come and say hello if you are in the vicinity of one. Dates are listed to the left.
If you don't manage to catch me before Christmas, we are open at the grove over January. Plan a day in Martinborough and come to see us for a relaxed tasting and a wander round our olive grove. Martinborough Fair dates are listed on the left and we will have our usual stall under the trees in the Square towards Oxford Street. I look forward to seeing you there if not before.
The flowers
Today is full bloom for our olive trees. There is plenty of flower this year but we will not know the extent of the 2010 crop until fruit set at the end of January. The flowers look lovely blowing in the wind and we need those gentle breezes to aid pollination. This is always a nerve wracking time as Martinborough has a tendency towards gales at this time of year!
A simple summer recipe - Orange kebabs
We have recently returned from a short holiday in Spain which revived the batteries and gave me some olive oil inspiration. The recipe below was given to me by a chef in Madrid who had worked with Ferran Adria at elBulli, noted as one of the best restaurants in the world. He loved the grassiness of New Zealand olive oils. You could try this with our extra virgin blend or the orange infused olive oil.
For 4 people
4 oranges cut into cubes
Bamboo skewers
Mint chopped finely
Good extra virgin or orange infused olive oil
Thread the orange cubes onto the skewers, place in a dish. Scatter the mint over the skewers and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil.
A very simple and refreshing dessert after a summer barbecue.
Enjoy
Have a wonderful restful Christmas with lots of fresh gorgeous food.
Best regards
Helen and John Meehan
